Venice - Fujifilm GFX100RF
Rainy day in Venice - Fujifilm GFX100RF
I have always wanted to be good at street photography, but honestly, I have a LONG way to go….
I decided to take a trip with the Fujifilm GFX100RF to a place that I love… It is not my typical up north, cold and snowy destination, It´s is actually the very warm Venice. There is something about this place… You can feel the history.. And if you wander of the main streets, which are in fact the least interesting streets, overcrowded and with street vendors that have nothing to do with Venice, Then you come to narrow paths that might lead you to some amazing spots! Or… dead ends… there is a lot of dead ends in Venice… But that is a big part of the “something” that I talked about earlier… You never know what is around the corner.
But like I said, I have a long way to go to be good at street photography, I can take pictures from a far yeah, And capture moods is no problem. But getting up close and personal, talking to people and asking if I can take a shot, or just raising the camera and snap, that is still quite difficult for me. I am after all not a very “people person” kind… I am quite introvert and like my private bubble when I am out shooting. Maybe that is why I am pulled so much into landscape photography in the furthest regions of the world… And the coldest.. very few people haha! But my plan this year is to overcome that and be better. I see pictures from people like Jonas Rask, Mads Guldager and more fellow photographers and those shots make me want to be good at it!

The camera.
Now, let´s talk a bit about this amazing camera. The Fujifilm GFX100RF. I tried it out for the first time in one of my trips to Greenland, And I have to say it changed the way I shoot and compose my shots! I was stuck for a while in the social media formats, Always shooting 4 by 5 or 4 by 3… And thinking about what would fit Instagram best… But because of the aspect ratio button, that all changed.
The fact that you do not have to go into the settings menu of the camera to change anything, that you can just scroll easily between the ratios makes it so easy to capture so many different aspects of the same subject in a short time makes you want to do it… Before this dial came along it just took to long to think about different formats, but now, few seconds and you can get a great variety of shots for your portfolio!
Also, this camera is 735 grams… and it fits in a tiny bag or hangs easily on your shoulder. This is the first camera that is pulling me towards street photography! The only reason I went to Venice was to try it out in those kind of circumstances. LOADS of walking, I walked over 50km in 3 days, or… that is a lot for me atleast… Some people run that in a day! But I am more of a mountain goat, so short distances but more altitude! But anyway, walking those kilometers with that camera was as easy as drinking coffee… which I did a lot of as well….
And to have that CMOS II censor on such a small camera is insane… 102MP that you can play around with! Even if the camera has a set lens, A 35mm which is equivalent to a 28mm lens on most cameras, having those 102MP makes it so easy to crop your shot afterwards if you can´t get close enough for the frame that you want… Or even if you have a busy frame, lots of things happening in one shot, than you can crop that shot down to many!
And of course you have the digital tele-converter to crop in if you want… But I like to do it myself afterwards so I have the full frame to play with!
Honestly, I would not have as much fun shooting street photography with my Xh2S or XT3 or 4…. For me there is just something about it with the GFX100RF… The size helps of course, and the sensor that gives you those 102MP… But there is something more, The camera body.. It just screams at me to use it in many different ways… Not only landscapes, Not only streets, but more.. And in the very near future I am going to try it out in many different environments… Maybe even a massive model shoot, or cars and bikes… We will see.. But one thing is for certain… I look forward to using that camera much more!
